Y’all know..
Albums used to really be moments and events, back in the early 90’s. Opening the CD or cassette, spendin’ time reading the liner notes, seeing who produced what, etc. This is what made coppin’ a classic, such a memorable experience. Some albums you can still recall buyin’, others not so much. I will always remember buyin’ Diamond D’s Stunts, Blunts & Hip Hop, like it was yesterday. It’s kinda hard to put this album at #15 because it’s sort of shaped the standard for what I consider to be a classic album, post-’92. I had already been a huge fan of Lord Finesse, and I already had Showbiz & A.G.’s Runaway Slave. I basically knew that DITC made nothin’ but classic music, so I was definitely lookin’ forward to gettin’ this album. I first heard Diamond on A Tribe Called Quest’s “Show Business”, and thought if he made a whole album, it’d be a must-buy.
I had so many favorite joints on this album, that I still listen to today. This is the kind of album that never leaves heavy rotation. I’m still rollin’ with “Pass Dat Sh*t”, “Step to Me”, “I Went for Mine”, “Sally Got a One-Track Mind”, “Red Light, Green Light”, “Freestyle (Yo, That’s That Sh*t)”, “What You Seek”, “F*ck What U Heard”, and “Feel the Vibe” (which has horns on it, that may be some of the best chopped in Hip Hop history). It’s possible that we took albums as dope as this one for granted back then, because you just don’t see complete releases like this anymore. The fact that Diamond produced his own tracks, only added to how incredible this joint was. This is easily a straight listen from the first track to the last. And remember, I initially had this album on cassette! I wouldn’t get the CD until years later, so that shows you that I definitely wasn’t skippin’ tracks. And you won’t either, if you run out and cop this. If you own the album already, you know what it is! If not, you should really change that immediately.
Get yours..
