Tech & Toys: SEGA Genesis is Back in Production

Around the late 80’s to early 90’s, video-gaming became the thing for my friends and I. While we still loved cartoons and comic books, video games took our interest to new heights. Everyone was saving their money up for games and systems. And we started spending a lot of our time and allowance in arcades. As we all got older, we still loved gaming, but it just wasn’t the same as it was back in the day.

Retro video game enthusiasts, rejoice, as the beloved SEGA Genesis is now back in production. It’s not exactly how you might think, though. Sega’s officially licensed manufacturing partner, Brazil’s TecToy has developed a new Genesis console that not only looks almost identical to the original, but also has a traditional cartridge slot and SD card reader.

A lot of people were puzzled at the fact that a Brazilian company was resurrecting the classic console. But in Brazil, around 150,000 units of the SEGA Genesis still sell each year. In addition to the likeness, TecToy’s Genesis has an integrated circuit which uses similar components to the original console. It also comes with the classic three-button controller and 22 games in the memory, which is beyond dope.

Look for TecToy’s Genesis console to release in June 2017 for approximately $138 USD. You can also pre-order it now, if you’re like us and have issues with waiting to invest.
