Dopeness: Hype Means Nothing - Warhol vs. Basquiat

Wow..

Fresh from the colette oven are new tees from Hype Means Nothing. This time around, instead of celebrities and pop culture icons, the label turned to Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat. Both men worked together and created more than a hundred paintings over a year’s time, where sixteen of those works were showcased at the Tony Shafrazi Gallery in 1985. In terms of their creative process, Warhol would trace corporate logos, newspaper texts and such found images using an opaque projector, then Basquiat would make his mark by painting over and in-between the reproduced images. As Keith Haring mentioned, the duo’s work is a “a physical conversation happening in paint instead of words”.

Drawing on the dynamics of both artists, Hype Means Nothing created two tees with Basquiat and Warhol donning the label’s signature hand eye glasses. Working on cult icons and images, there is a striking similarity between the artists’ works and the label. The tees are now available in two colorways each (Black and white) at colette.

This is another MUST COP, folkers!!
